Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

The amount of sessions you will need will depend on your specific needs. I believe in providing the most cost effective and efficient therapy possible. I work in a solution-focused way which means that we will look to find solutions to your issue as quickly as possible rather than spending unnecessary time focused on the problem or the past. The minimum recommendation I make (with the exception of smoking cessation) is for five sessions, but this is not compulsory.

Some clients like to meet weekly whilst others prefer slightly longer gaps in-between sessions.

There is no pressure to attend multiple sessions and we can discuss your wishes around this at the start of your first session.

What if I can’t be hypnotised?

Hypnosis is a natural, normal state that we go into and out of several times a day. It is this focused state of attention which, when you are engrossed in a television programme stops you from noticing a conversation that is going on next to you. You are in a trance state when you are daydreaming, or when you are completely immersed in a piece of music. You may even be in a trance as you read this.

Hypnosis in a therapy setting is about utilising this state and learning how to go in and out of it. There are different levels of hypnosis and some people will naturally go deeper than others. You might drift deeper on different days depending on what is right for you.

Hypnosis is not something you can do wrong, even the lightest trance is incredibly beneficial and most work can be done at this level. Often the more experience you have with hypnosis, the deeper you will go.

However, it is important for a hypnotherapist to also be trained in psychotherapy in order to work with you in the most effective way possible. Whilst hypnotherapy is often enough to make long lasting changes, additional skills in psychotherapy allow a more tailored approach and mean that work can be done in or out of trance.

Will I lose control when hypnotised?

No. Hypnotherapy is not the same as the stage hypnosis you may have seen on television. You will not do or say anything that you do not want to.

I abide by the ethical guidelines of the NCHP, CNHC and UKCP which mean that I only work in a way that has your best interests at the forefront. Hypnosis is not about the therapist controlling you, you have complete control at all times. You are able to move and to talk in hypnosis, and should you need to become alert at any point during the session you would do so quite naturally and easily.

Is everything discussed in therapy confidential?

Everything that you discuss within therapy is absolutely confidential from your first contact.

I abide by the ethical framework of NCHP, CNHC and UKCP which require me to have regular supervision with an accredited supervisor, therefore, in order to provide you with the best care, I may discuss your case with my supervisor. Identifying details such as name, gender and location are anonymised.

There are some important exceptions where confidentiality must be breached, and these are:

If I become aware, or have good reason to suspect, that you have knowledge of:

• A past or future incident/situation that may be dangerous or harmful to a child, you or another adult, and that is not known to the relevant authorities.

• Future or past criminal activity that has not been resolved in law. This means any criminal activity, of which the relevant authorities are either unaware or a case they know about which they consider not to be closed (provided you do not present information in therapy which would reasonably re-open the case). This does not include parking or traffic offences unless there is intent, by you or anyone else, to cause danger to yourself or others, or that it is deemed to be a “serious offence”. For our purposes a serious offence is something for which you could be imprisoned and for which the sentence (not necessarily imprisonment) hasn’t yet been served.

In these circumstances I will work with you to see if we can work together to make appropriate disclosures.

• It is also compulsory to report terrorism, potential radicalisation, money laundering and female genital mutilation to the appropriate authorities.

What are your fees?

Sessions last for 55 minutes and are £70 per session.*

A block of 5 sessions is £320.

Smoking cessation is £295 for 2 sessions 3 weeks apart, plus a 6-month review session.

There are several ways of paying for your sessions- I accept cash and bank transfer, and I am also recognised by health insurance companies (please enquire for details). I am registered with the Information Commissioner’s office, please see my privacy policy to understand how your data is protected in line with GDPR.

*Session rate will be discounted to £65 for carers/Blue Light Card holders/low income when paid in advance. Limited slots available.

Where are you based for in-person therapy?

I work from a secure and confidential room in a therapy centre in Little Hulton, on the border of Worsley, Manchester. The therapy centre is well linked by a range of bus routes stopping nearby and there is plenty of unrestricted parking on nearby roads. Access is ideal for clients travelling from Worsley, Bolton, Tyldesley, Farnworth, Swinton, Eccles, Monton and further across Greater Manchester.

What is your cancellation policy?

I understand that sometimes appointments need to be rearranged and I try to be as flexible as possible with my appointment times. I ask for a minimum of 48 hours’ notice for cancellations to avoid a fee. Any cancellation made with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged at the normal session rate of £70. Sessions cancelled with 24-48 hours' notice will incur a cancellation fee of 50%.

If you have booked a block of five sessions, the session will be forfeited. This is to ensure appointments are available to other people who may also require them.

How does therapy online work?

Conducting hypnotherapy online is no different than in person and is perfectly safe.

Zoom and Teams are available for online therapy. These are straightforward to set up and I can assist you with this process if required.

You’ll need a camera and a microphone to get started (usually, both are built in to newer laptops). It’s also worth ensuring that you have a private, quiet space in which to conduct the session uninterrupted.

There are a few other considerations that we will talk through before we start, but these are very simple and easy to follow.

What are your appointment times?

My appointment times are flexible to enable you to access therapy when you need it.

What is your social media policy?

I do not accept friend or contact requests from former or current clients on any social networking site as this can not only compromise your confidentiality (e.g. if another of my friends saw that you were a friend, they may wonder how we know each other) but would also blur the boundary of the therapeutic relationship.

Following

I tweet on a very occasional basis as an individual, not as a business. I would suggest not following me and if I notice that you have I would suggest we discuss this. I will not follow you on Twitter/X as this can cause confusion around the purpose of this: would it be part of your therapy or would I just be being curious?

Interacting

Please do not use public ways of contact (e.g. @replies or tagging) again because of the potential for this to compromise your confidentiality. You may use Facebook messenger, WhatsApp or text to discuss appointment times or other logistics but not therapeutic issues. The latter cannot be kept secure.

Use of search engines

I do not routinely Google my clients but may very occasionally in a time of crisis. For example, if you had failed to attend a session and I was concerned for your safety I may try to find out about you this way. If I did so, I would tell you about it the next time we met.

Business review sites

You may find my name on business review sites but I have not asked to be on these. Businesses do not get a choice. Clients are free to post whatever they choose and due to confidentiality I cannot comment on anything that is posted. Indeed, anyone (including a competitor) can post anything so it is advisable to be aware that reviews (good or bad) may not be representative of the views of real clients.

It is considered unethical by some of my professional bodies (the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy) to publish testimonials and so you will not find any testimonials coming from me although it is always nice to receive private messages from clients who have completed their therapy.

Location-based services

If you use location-based services on your phone you should be aware that others may surmise that you are a therapy client if you are seen as “checking in” at my address.

Email

It is preferable to use email only for logistical contact (e.g. to get a reminder of an appointment time) due to the inherent insecurity of email. If you wish to engage in “email therapy” then please use a password protected word document to contain what you wish to say. I can set this up for you if you need it.

Phone

As above, texting may be used for contact about appointment times. This is preferable to making a phone call as it is easier to respond as I cannot answer the phone if I am with another client. Whether phoning or texting, please only do so between the hours of 9am and 8pm.

Do you work with under 18s?

Unfortunately, I am not currently in a position to offer therapy to under 18s. Please refer to UKCP’s find a therapist register to search for therapists who specialise in working with children and young people.

Do you work with businesses?

I do indeed. I have worked in the corporate sector and with the NHS for over a decade to National Sales Manager level, so I have lived experience and significant insight into the varied challenges faced by organisations and their people.

I offer individual sessions and workshops on many business tasks, from public speaking and confidence building to managing stress, organisational change and building team morale. This includes teaching you or your team techniques to thrive, even when the chips are down. This can be enormously helpful to you and have a positive impact on both your personal and professional life. Do get in touch for further information.
